Clinical Use | Vitamin E deficiency is characterized by low serum tocopherol levels and a positive hydrogen peroxide hemolysis test. This deficiency is thought to occur in patients with biliary, pancreatic, or intestinal disorders characterized by excessive steatorrhea. Premature infants who consume large amounts of fatty acids exhibit a deficiency syndrome characterized by edema, anemia, and low tocopherol levels. This condition can be reversed by the administration of vitamin E. |
Side Effects | Long-term use of high doses of vitamin E may cause muscle weakness, fatigue, headaches, and nausea. This toxicity can be reversed by stopping high-dose supplementation. |
